Somber

Today's Friday photo theme is "somber", which fits with the theme of our activities these two weeks, mid-summer 2005. There is nothing more somber, or at least more sobering, than a picture of an open grave..this one being the one where we put grandma's ashes last weekend.

And this weekend, we'll be doing it all over again, as Barb's dad, Sam, has also passed away. The two funerals will be as different as they can be, since the two families could not be more different. However, the purpose is the same - to honor the dead and give the living some closure. In Pennsylvania, we took a look at the family bible, where names and dates have been recorded for several generations.

It looks like we have just about run out of room, which is fine with me! If you can't inscribe it, maybe it just won't happen. There was talk of writing grandma's name up the right-hand margin of the page. Looking at this list more carefully now, I see several Johnstons, and I have no idea who they were. In a way, I wish we had a more unique name, because it's certain that doing geneology on this bunch would be nearly impossible. When I first got on the internet, I guess it was the early 90's, that was all that people were doing, looking up births and deaths. Before google! can you imagine.
